1Then, six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, who had died, whom He raised from the dead. 2There they made Him a supper; and Martha served, but Lazarus was one of those reclining with Him. 3Then Mary took a pound of very costly ointment of spikenard, anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped His feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the ointment. 4Then one of His disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, who was about to betray Him, said, 5Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor? 6This he said, not that he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief, and had the moneybag; and he used to take what was put in it. 7But Jesus said, Let her alone; she has kept this for the day of My burial. 8For the poor you have with you always, but Me you do not have always. 9Now a great many of the Jews knew that He was there; and they came, not because of Jesus only, but that they might also see Lazarus, whom He had raised from the dead. 10But the chief priests took counsel to put Lazarus to death also, 11because on account of him many of the Jews went away and continued to believe into Jesus. 12The next day a great multitude that had come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, 13took branches of palm trees and went out to meet Him, and cried out: Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord! The King of Israel! 14And Jesus, when He had found a young donkey, sat on it; as it is written: 15Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your King is coming, sitting on a donkey's colt. 16His disciples did not understand these things at first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written about Him and that they had done these things to Him. 17Therefore the crowd, who were with Him when He called Lazarus out of his tomb and raised him from the dead, bore witness. 18For this reason also the crowd met Him, because they heard that He had done this sign. 19The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, You see that you are accomplishing nothing. Behold, the world has gone after Him! 20Now there were certain Greeks among those who came up to do homage at the feast. 21They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida of Galilee, and asked him, saying, Sir, we wish to see Jesus. 22Philip came and told Andrew, and in turn Andrew and Philip told Jesus. 23But Jesus answered them, saying, The hour has come that the Son of Man should be glorified. 24Truly, truly, I say to you, Unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it brings forth much fruit. 25He who loves his life will lose it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it unto eternal life.  26If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also. If anyone serves Me, My Father will honor him. 27Now My soul is troubled, and what shall I say? Father, save Me out of this hour? But for this purpose I came unto this hour. 28Father, glorify Your name. Then a voice came from Heaven, saying, I have both glorified it and will glorify it again. 29Therefore the people who stood by and heard it said that it had thundered. Others said, An angel has spoken to Him. 30Jesus answered and said, This voice did not come because of Me, but because of you. 31Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out. 32And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all to Myself. 33This He said, signifying by what sort of death He was about to die. 34The people answered Him, We have heard out of the Law that the Christ remains forever; and how can You say, The Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man? 35Then Jesus said to them, A little while longer the Light is with you. Walk while you have the Light, that darkness not overtake you; for he who walks in darkness does not know where he is going. 36While you have the Light, believe into the Light, that you may become sons of Light. These things Jesus spoke, and departed, and was hidden from them. 37But although He had done so many signs before them, they did not believe into Him, 38that the word of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spoke: Lord, who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? 39Therefore they were not able to believe, because Isaiah said again: 40He has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts, that they should not see with their eyes, that they should not understand with their hearts and be turned, and I should heal them. 41These things Isaiah said when he saw His glory and spoke of Him. 42Nevertheless even among the rulers many believed into Him, but because of the Pharisees they did not confess Him, that they might not be put out of the synagogue; 43for they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God. 44And Jesus cried out and said, He who believes into Me, believes not into Me but into Him who sent Me. 45And he who sees Me sees Him who sent Me. 46I have come as a Light into the world, that everyone believing into Me should not remain in darkness. 47And if anyone hears My words and does not believe, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world. 48He who rejects Me, and does not receive My words, has that which judges him; the Word that I speak will judge him in the Last Day. 49For I do not speak from Myself; but the Father who sent Me gives Me orders, what I should say and what I should speak. 50And I know that His command is eternal life. Therefore, whatever I speak, just as the Father has said unto Me, so I speak.


Comentario de la Biblia de Matthew Henry
Versículos 1-11. María unge a Cristo. 12-19. Entra a Jerusalén. 20-26. Unos griegos quieren ver a Jesús. 27-33. Una voz desde el cielo da testimonio de Cristo. 34-36. Su sermón para el pueblo. 37-43. Incredulidad de los judíos. 44-50, El discurso de Cristo para ellos.

Vv. 1-11. Cristo había reprendido a Marta anteriormente porque se afanaba con mucho servicio, pero ella no dejó de servir, como algunos que, con belicosidad, se van al otro extremo cuando son hallados en falta por exagerar una cosa; ella siguió sirviendo, pero dentro del alcance de las palabras de la gracia de Cristo.
María dio una señal de amor a Cristo, que le había dado verdaderas señales de su amor por ella y su familia. El Ungido de Dios será nuestro Ungido. Como Dios derramó el óleo de alegría sobre Él, por más que a sus compañeros, así nosotros derramemos el ungüento de nuestros mejores afectos sobre Él.
El pecado necio es embellecido con un pretexto creíble por Judas. No debemos pensar que los que no hacen el servicio a nuestra manera no lo hacen de manera aceptable. El amor al dinero que reina es robo de corazón. La gracia de Cristo hace comentarios bondadosos de las palabras y acciones piadosos, sacando lo mejor de lo que está mal, y el máximo de lo bueno. Se debe aprovechar las oportunidades; y primero y con mayor vigor las que probablemente sean las más breves.
Confabularse para impedir el efecto ulterior del milagro, matando a Lázaro, es tanta iniquidad, malicia y necedad que no se puede entender, salvo por la enemistad enconada del corazón humano contra Dios. Ellos resolvieron que debía morir el hombre que el Señor había resucitado. El éxito del evangelio suele enojar tanto a los impíos que hablan y actúan como si esperaran triunfar sobre el mismo Todopoderoso.

Vv. 12-19. La entrada triunfal de Cristo en Jerusalén la registran todos los evangelistas.
Los discípulos no entienden muchas cosas excelentes de la palabra y de la providencia de Dios, en la primera instancia de su conocimiento de las cosas de Dios. El entendimiento recto de la naturaleza espiritual del reino de Cristo impide que apliquemos mal las Escrituras que hablan al respecto.

Vv. 20-26. El gran deseo de nuestra alma será ver a Jesús al participar en las santas ordenanzas, en particular de la pascua del evangelio; verlo como nuestro, teniendo comunión con Él y derivando gracia de Él.
El llamado a los gentiles magnificó al Redentor. Una semilla de trigo no produce a menos que sea sepultada. Así Cristo podría haber poseído solo su gloria celestial sin volverse hombre. O, después de haber asumido la naturaleza humana, podría haber entrado solo al cielo, por su justicia perfecta, sin sufrimientos ni muerte, pero entonces, ningún pecador de la raza humana hubiera podido ser salvo. La salvación de nuestras almas hasta ahora y de aquí en adelante hasta el fin del tiempo, se debe a la muerte de esa simiente de trigo. Busquemos si Cristo es en nosotros la esperanza de gloria; roguémosle que nos haga indiferentes a los afanes triviales de esta vida, para que sirvamos al Señor Jesús con mente dispuesta, y para seguir su santo ejemplo.

Vv. 27-33. El pecado de nuestras almas fue la angustia del alma de Cristo cuando emprendió nuestra redención y salvación, haciendo de su alma la ofrenda por el pecado. Cristo estaba dispuesto a sufrir, pero oró pidiendo que se le salvara de sufrir. La oración pidiendo ser librado de la tribulación puede concordar bien con la paciencia que hay tras ellos, y con el sometimiento a la voluntad de Dios en ellos. Nuestro Señor Jesús decidió satisfacer la honra de Dios injuriado, y lo hizo humillándose a sí mismo. La voz del Padre desde el cielo, que lo había declarado su amado Hijo, en su bautismo y en la transfiguración, se oyó proclamando que había glorificado su nombre que lo volvería a glorificar.
Reconciliando el mundo a Dios por el mérito de su muerte, Cristo rompió el poder de la muerte, y echó fuera a Satanás como destructor. Llevando el mundo a Dios por la doctrina de su cruz, Cristo rompió el poder del pecado y echó fuera a Satanás como engañador. El alma que estaba distanciada de Cristo es llevada a amarle y confiar en Él. Ahora Jesús se iba al cielo, y llevaría allá los corazones de los hombres. Hay poder en la muerte de Cristo para atraer las almas a Él. Hemos oído del evangelio lo que enaltece la libre gracia, y también hemos oído lo que llama al deber; debemos aceptar ambos de todo corazón sin separarlos.

Vv. 34-36. La gente sacó nociones falsas de las Escrituras porque pasaron por alto las profecías que hablan de los sufrimientos y la muerte de Cristo. Nuestro Señor les advirtió que la luz no seguiría con ellos por mucho tiempo más, y les exhortó a caminar en ella antes que la oscuridad los alcanzara. Los que quieren andar en la luz deben creer en ella y seguir las instrucciones de Cristo. Pero los que no tienen fe, no pueden contemplar lo que se presenta en Jesús, levantado en la cruz, y son ajenos a su influencia, como lo da a conocer el Espíritu Santo; hallan miles de objeciones para excusar su incredulidad.

Vv. 37-43. Obsérvese el método de conversión aquí implicado. Los pecadores son llevados a ver la realidad de las cosas divinas y a tener un cierto conocimiento de ellas; para que se conviertan y se vuelvan verdaderamente del pecado a Cristo, como su Dicha y Porción. Dios los sanará, los justificará y santificará; perdonará sus pecados, que son como heridas sangrantes y mortificará sus corrupciones, que son como enfermedades que acechan.
Véase aquí el poder del mundo para amortiguar la convicción de pecado teniendo en cuenta el aplauso o la censura de los hombres. El amor al elogio de los hombres, como subproducto de lo bueno, hará hipócrita al hombre cuando la religión está de moda y por ella se obtiene mérito; el amor al elogio de los hombres, como principio vil de lo malo, hará un apóstata del hombre cuando la religión caiga en desgracia y se pierda el mérito por ella.

Vv. 44-50. Nuestro Señor proclamó públicamente que todo aquel que creyera en Él, como su discípulo verdadero, no creería sólo en Él, sino en el Padre que le envió. Contemplando en Jesús la gloria del Padre, aprendemos a obedecer, amar y confiar en Él. Mirando diariamente a Aquel que vino como Luz al mundo, somos liberados crecientemente de las tinieblas de la ignorancia, del error, del pecado y la miseria; aprendemos que el mandamiento de Dios nuestro Salvador es vida eterna, aunque la misma palabra sellará la condenación de todos los que la desprecian o la rechazan.
