1Therefore, when the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and immersed more disciples than John 2(though Jesus Himself did not immerse, but His disciples), 3He left Judea and departed again into Galilee. 4And He needed to go through Samaria. 5So He came to a city of Samaria which is called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. 6Now Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied from His journey, sat thus by the well. It was about the sixth hour. 7A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, Give Me a drink. 8For His disciples had gone away into the city to buy food. 9Then the woman of Samaria said to Him, How is it that You, being a Jew, ask a drink from me, a Samaritan woman? For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans. 10Jesus answered and said to her, If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, Give Me a drink, you would have asked Him, and He would give you living water. 11The woman said to Him, Sir, You have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep. Where then do You get that living water? 12Are You greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank from it himself, as well as his sons and his livestock? 13Jesus answered and said to her, Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again, 14but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will not ever thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into eternal life. 15The woman said to Him, Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw. 16Jesus said to her, Go, call your husband, and come here. 17The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said to her, You have well said, I have no husband, 18for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; in that you spoke truly. 19The woman said to Him, Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet. 20Our fathers did homage on this mountain, and you say that in Jerusalem is the right place to do homage. 21Jesus said to her, Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming when you will do homage to the Father neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem. 22You do homage to what you do not know; we do homage to what we know, for salvation is of the Jews. 23But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will do homage to the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father seeks such to do homage to Him. 24God is Spirit, and those who do homage to Him must do homage in spirit and truth. 25The woman said to Him, I know that Messiah is coming (who is called Christ). When He comes, He will make known all things to us. 26Jesus said to her, I AM! the One speaking to you. 27And at this point His disciples came, and they marveled that He talked with a woman; yet no one said, What do You seek? or, Why are You talking with her? 28The woman then left her waterpot, went her way into the city, and said to the men, 29Come, see a Man who told me everything that I ever did. Is this not the Christ? 30Then they went out of the city and came to Him. 31In the meantime His disciples urged Him, saying, Rabbi, eat. 32But He said to them, I have food to eat of which you do not know. 33Therefore the disciples said to one another, Has anyone brought Him anything to eat? 34Jesus said to them, My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work. 35Do you not say, There are yet four months and then comes the harvest? And there was a certain nobleman whose son was sick at Capernaum. 47When he heard that Jesus had come out of Judea into Galilee, he went to Him and begged Him to come down and heal his son, for he was about to die. 48Then Jesus said to him, Unless you see signs and wonders, you will by no means believe. 49The nobleman said to Him, Sir, come down before my child dies! 50Jesus said to him, Go your way; your son lives. So the man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him, and he went his way. 51And as he was now going down, his servants met him and told him, saying, Your son lives! 52Then he inquired of them the hour when he got better. And they said to him, Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him. 53So the father knew that it was at the same hour in which Jesus said to him, Your son lives. And he himself believed, and his whole household. 54This again is the second sign Jesus did when He had come out of Judea into Galilee.

Cristo sana al hijo del noble. Vv. 1-3. Jesús se dedicó más a predicar, que era más excelente, que a bautizar, 1 Corintios i, 17. Honraría a sus discípulos empleándolos para bautizar. Nos enseña que el beneficio de los sacramentos no depende de la mano que los administra.
Vv. 4-26. Había mucho odio entre samaritanos y judíos. El camino de Cristo desde Judea a Galilea pasaba por Samaria. No debemos meternos en lugares de tentación, sino cuando debemos y, entonces, no debemos permanecer en ellos, sino apresurarnos a pasar por ellos.
Aquí tenemos a nuestro Señor Jesús sujeto a la fatiga normal de los viajeros. Así vemos que era verdadero hombre. El trabajo agotador vino con el pecado; por tanto, Cristo, habiéndose hecho maldición por nosotros, estuvo sujeto a ella. Además, era pobre y realizó todos sus viajes a pie. Cansado, pues, se sentó en el pozo; no tenía un cojín donde descansar.
De este modo se sentó, como se sienta alguien cansado de viajar. Con toda seguridad debemos someternos rápidamente a ser como el Hijo de Dios en cosas como esas.
Cristo pidió agua a la mujer. Ella se sorprendió porque Él no demostró la ira de su nación contra los samaritanos. Los hombres moderados de todas partes son los hombres que asombran. Cristo aprovechó la ocasión para enseñarle cosas divinas: Convirtió a esta mujer demostrándole su ignorancia y pecaminosidad y su necesidad de un Salvador. Se alude al Espíritu con el agua viva. Con esta comparación se había prometido la bendición del Mesías en el Antiguo Testamento. Las gracias del Espíritu y sus consolaciones satisfacen el alma sedienta que conoce su propia naturaleza y necesidad.
Lo que Jesús dijo figuradamente, ella lo entendió literalmente. Cristo señala que el agua del pozo de Jacob daba una satisfacción de breve duración. No importa cuáles sean las aguas de consolación que bebamos, volveremos a tener sed. Pero a quien participa del Espíritu de gracia, y del consuelo del evangelio, nunca le faltará lo que dará abundante satisfacción a su alma. Los corazones carnales no miran más alto que las metas carnales. Dame, dijo ella, no para que yo tenga la vida eterna, propuesta por Cristo, sino para que no tenga que venir más aquí a buscar agua.
La mente carnal es muy ingeniosa para cambiar las convicciones e impedir que apremien, pero ¡nuestro Señor Jesús dirige muy certeramente la convicción de pecado a la conciencia de ella! La reprendió severamente por su presente estado de vida.
La mujer reconoció que Cristo era profeta. El poder de su palabra para escudriñar el corazón y convencer de cosas secretas a la conciencia es prueba de autoridad divina.
Pensar que desaparecen las cosas por las que luchamos debiera enfriar nuestras contiendas. El objeto de adoración seguirá siendo el mismo, Dios, como Padre, pero se pondrá fin a todas las diferencias sobre el lugar de adoración. La razón nos enseña a considerar la decencia y la conveniencia en los lugares de nuestro servicio de adoración, pero la religión no da preferencia a un lugar respecto de otro en cuanto a la santidad y la aprobación de Dios.
Los judíos tenían, por cierto, la razón. Quienes han obtenido cierto conocimiento de Dios por las Escrituras, saben
a quién adoran. La palabra de salvación era de los judíos. Llegó a otras naciones a través de ellos. Cristo prefirió, con justicia, la adoración judía antes que la samaritana, pero aquí habla de lo anterior como algo que pronto se terminará. Dios estaba por ser revelado como el Padre de todos los creyentes de toda nación. El espíritu o alma del hombre, influido por el Espíritu Santo, debe adorar a Dios y tener comunión con Él. Los afectos espirituales, como se demuestran en las oraciones, súplicas y acciones de gracia fervorosas, constituyen la adoración de un corazón recto, en el cual Dios se deleita y es glorificado.
La mujer estaba dispuesta a dejar la cuestión sin decidir hasta la venida del Mesías, pero Cristo le dijo: Yo soy, el que habla contigo. Ella era una samaritana extranjera y hostil; el sólo hablar con ella era considerado como desprestigio para nuestro Señor Jesús. Sin embargo, nuestro Señor se reveló a esta mujer con más plenitud de lo que había hecho con cualquiera de sus discípulos. Ningún pecado
pasado puede impedir que seamos aceptados por Él, si nos humillamos ante Él, creyendo en Él como el Cristo, el Salvador del mundo.
Vv. 27-42. Los discípulos se asombraron de que Cristo conversara con una samaritana, aunque sabían que era por una buena razón y para un propósito bueno. Así, pues, cuando aparecen dificultades en detalles en la palabra y en la providencia de Dios, es bueno que nos satisfagamos con que todo lo que Jesucristo dice y hace está bien.
Dos cosas afectaron a la mujer. La magnitud de su conocimiento. Cristo conoce todos los pensamientos, palabras y acciones de todos los hijos de los hombres. El poder de su palabra. Le habló con poder de sus pecados secretos. Ella se aferró de esa parte del discurso de Cristo, muchos pensarían que ella se podía mostrar reacia a repetir, pero el conocimiento de Cristo, al cual somos guiados por la convicción de pecado, es muy probable que sea sano y salvador.
Ellos fueron a Él: los que deseen conocer a Cristo deben hallarlo donde Él registre su nombre. Nuestro Maestro nos ha dejado un ejemplo para que aprendamos a hacer la voluntad de Dios como Él la hizo; con diligencia como los que hacen su actividad de ella; con deleite y placer en ella. Cristo compara su obra con la siega. La siega está determinada y se cuida antes que llegue; así fue el evangelio. El tiempo de cosechar es tiempo de mucho trabajo; entonces, todos deben estar en las labores. El tiempo de la siega es corto y la obra de la cosecha debe hacerse entonces, o no se hará; así, pues, el tiempo del evangelio es una temporada que no puede recuperarse si se pasó. A veces Dios usa instrumentos muy débiles e improbables para empezar y seguir la buena obra. Nuestro Salvador difunde conocimiento en todo un pueblo enseñándole a una pobre mujer. Benditos son los que no se ofenden con Cristo. Desean verdaderamente aprender más aquellos a quienes Dios enseña. Mucho agrega a la alabanza de nuestro amor por Cristo y su palabra si vence prejuicios.
La fe de ellos creció. En cuanto a esto: ellos creyeron que Él era el Salvador no sólo de los judíos, sino del mundo. Con esa certeza sabemos que el Cristo es verdaderamente Aquel, y sobre esa base, porque nosotros mismos le hemos oído.
Vv. 43-54. El padre era un oficial del rey, pero el hijo estaba enfermo. Los honores y los títulos no son garantía contra la enfermedad y la muerte. Los hombres más grandes deben ir a Dios, deben volverse mendigos. El noble no se detuvo en su petición hasta que prevaleció, pero primeramente, descubrió la debilidad de su fe en el poder de Cristo. Cuesta convencernos de que la distancia de tiempo y lugar no obstaculizan el conocimiento, la misericordia ni el poder de nuestro Señor Jesús.
Cristo dio una respuesta de paz. Si Cristo dice que el alma viva, vivirá. El padre siguió su camino lo que demostró la sinceridad de su fe. Satisfecho, no se apresuró a volver a casa esa noche; regresó como quien está en paz con su conciencia. Sus sirvientes le salieron al encuentro con la noticia de la recuperación de su hijo. La buena nueva saldrá al encuentro de los que esperan en la palabra de Dios. Confirma nuestra fe que comparemos diligentemente las obras de Jesús con su palabra. Y llevar la curación a la familia le trajo la salvación. Así, pues, experimentar el poder de una palabra de Cristo puede establecer la autoridad de Cristo en el alma. Toda la familia creyó igualmente. El milagro hizo que quisieran a Jesús para ellos. El conocimiento de Cristo aún se difunde por las familias, y los hombres hallan salud y salvación para sus almas.
