1I say then, has God cast away His people? Let it not be! For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin. 2God has not cast away His people whom He foreknew. Or do you not know what the Scripture says of Elijah, how he pleads with God against Israel, saying, 3Lord, they have killed Your prophets and torn down Your altars, and I alone am left, and they seek my life. 4But what does the Divine response say to him? I have reserved to Myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baal.  5Even so then, at this present time there is a remnant according to the election of grace. 6And if by grace, then it is no longer of works; otherwise grace no longer becomes grace. But if it is of works, it is no longer grace; otherwise work is no longer work. 7What then? Israel has not obtained what it seeks; but the elect have obtained it, and the rest were hardened. 8Just as it is written: God has given them a spirit of deep sleep, eyes that they should not see and ears that they should not hear, to this very day. 9And David says: Let their table become a snare and a trap, and a stumbling block and a recompense to them. 10Let their eyes be darkened, so that they do not see, and bow down their back always. 11I say then, have they stumbled that they should come to an end? Let it not be! But through their trespass, to provoke them to jealousy, salvation has come to the Gentiles. 12Now if their trespass is riches for the world; and their diminishing, riches for the Gentiles; how much more their fullness. 13For I speak to you Gentiles; inasmuch as I am an apostle to the Gentiles, I magnify my ministry, 14if by any means I may provoke to jealousy those who are my flesh and save some of them. 15For if their being cast away is the reconciling of the world, what will their reception be but life from the dead? 16For if the firstfruit is holy, the lump is also holy; and if the root is holy, so are the branches. 17And if some of the branches were broken off, and you, being a wild olive tree, were grafted in among them, and with them became a partaker of the root and fatness of the olive tree, 18do not boast against the branches. But if you do boast, remember that you do not support the root, but the root supports you. 19You will say then, The branches were broken off that I might be grafted in. 20Well, because of unbelief they were broken off, and you stand by faith. Do not be highminded, but fear. 21For if God did not spare the natural branches, He may not spare you either. 22Therefore consider the goodness and severity of God: On those who fell, severity; but toward you, goodness, if you continue in His goodness. Otherwise you also will be cut off. 23And they also, if they do not continue in unbelief, will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again. 24For if you were cut out of the olive tree which is wild by nature, and were grafted contrary to nature into a cultivated olive tree, how much more will these, who are natural branches, be grafted into their own olive tree. 25For I do not desire, brethren, that you should be ignorant of this mystery, that you not be wise within yourselves, that hardness in part has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles comes in. 26And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written: The Deliverer will come out of Zion, and He will turn away ungodliness from Jacob; 27for this is My covenant with them, when I take away their sins. 28Indeed, concerning the gospel they are enemies because of you, but concerning the election they are beloved because of the fathers. 29For the gifts and the calling of God are without regret. 30For as you were once disobedient to God, yet have now obtained mercy through their disobedience, 31even so these also have now been disobedient, that through your mercy they also may obtain mercy. 32For God has enclosed everyone in disobedience, that He might have mercy on each one. 33Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past finding out! 34For who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has become His counselor? 35Or who has first given to Him and it shall be repaid to him? 36For of Him and through Him and to Him are all things, to whom be glory forever. Amen.


Comentario de la Biblia de Matthew Henry
Versículos 1-10. El rechazo de los judíos no es universal. 11-21. Dios pasó por alto la incredulidad de ellos al hacer a los gentiles partícipes de los privilegios del evangelio. 22-32. Los gentiles son advertidos contra el orgullo y la incredulidad. 33-36. Una solemne glorificación de la sabiduría, la bondad y la justicia de Dios.

Vv. 1-10. Hubo un remanente escogido de judíos creyentes que tuvo justicia y vida por fe en Jesucristo. Estos fueron preservados conforme a la elección de gracia. Si entonces esta elección era de gracia, no podía ser por obras, sean hechas o previstas. Toda disposición verdaderamente buena en una criatura caída debe ser efecto, por tanto, no puede ser causa, de la gracia de Dios otorgada a ella. La salvación de principio a fin debe ser de gracia o de deuda. Estas cosas se contradicen entre sí, tanto que no pueden fundirse. Dios glorifica su gracia cambiando los corazones y los temperamentos de los rebeldes. ¡Entonces, cómo debieran admirarlo y alabarlo! -La nación judía estaba como en un profundo sueño sin conocer su peligro ni interesarse al respecto; no tienen conciencia de necesitar al Salvador o de estar al borde de su destrucción eterna. Habiendo predicho por el Espíritu los sufrimientos de Cristo infligidos por su pueblo, David predice los terribles juicios de Dios contra ellos por eso, Salmo lxix. Vv. 11-21. El evangelio es la riqueza más grande en todo lugar donde esté. Por tanto, así como el justo rechazo de los judíos incrédulos fue la ocasión para que una multitud tan inmensa de gentiles se reconciliara con Dios, y tuviera paz con Él, la futura recepción de los judíos en la Iglesia significará un cambio tal que se parecerá a la resurrección general de los muertos en pecado a una vida de justicia.
Abraham era la raíz de la Iglesia. Los judíos eran ramas de este árbol hasta que, como nación, rechazaron al Mesías; después de eso, su relación con Abraham y Dios fue cortada. Los gentiles fueron injertados en este árbol en lugar de ellos, siendo admitidos en la Iglesia de Dios. Hubo multitudes hechas herederos de la fe, de la santidad y de la bendición de Abraham. El estado natural de cada uno de nosotros es ser silvestre por naturaleza. La conversión es como el injerto de las ramas silvestres en el buen olivo. El olivo silvestre se solía injertar en el fructífero cuando éste empezaba a decaer, entonces no sólo llevó fruto, sino hizo revivir y florecer al olivo decadente. Los gentiles, de pura gracia, fueron injertados para compartir las ventajas. Por tanto, debían cuidarse de confiar en sí mismos y de toda clase de orgullo y ambición; no fuera a ser que teniendo sólo una fe muerta y una profesión de fe vacía, se volvieran contra Dios y abandonaran sus privilegios. Si permanecemos es absolutamente por la fe; somos culpables e incapaces en nosotros mismos y tenemos que ser humildes, estar alertas, temer engañarnos con el yo, o de ser vencido por la tentación. No sólo tenemos que ser primero justificados por fe, pero debemos mantenernos hasta el final en el estado justificado sólo por fe, aunque por una fe que no está sola sino que obra por amor a Dios y el hombre.

Vv. 22-32. Los juicios espirituales son los más dolorosos de todos los juicios; de estos habla aquí el apóstol. La restauración de los judíos, en el curso de los acontecimientos, es mucho menos improbable que el llamamiento a los gentiles para ser los hijos de Abraham; y aunque ahora otros posean estos privilegios, no impedirá que sean admitidos de nuevo. Por rechazar el evangelio y por indignarse por la predicación a los gentiles, los judíos se volvieron enemigos de Dios; aunque aún son favorecidos por amor de sus padres piadosos. Aunque en la actualidad son enemigos del evangelio, por su odio a los gentiles, cuando llegue el tiempo de Dios, eso no existirá más, y el amor de Dios por sus padres será recordado.
La gracia verdadera no procura limitar el favor de Dios. Los que hallan misericordia deben esforzarse para que por su misericordia otros también puedan alcanzar misericordia. No se trata de una restauración en que los judíos vuelvan a tener su sacerdocio, el templo y las ceremonias nuevamente; a todo esto se puso fin; pero van a ser llevados a creer en Cristo, el Mesías verdadero, al cual crucificaron; van a ser llevados a la iglesia cristiana y se volverá un solo redil con los gentiles, sometidos a Cristo el gran Pastor. Las cautividades de Israel, su dispersión, y el hecho de ser excluidos de la iglesia son emblemas de los correctivos para los creyentes por hacer lo malo; el cuidado continuo del Señor para su pueblo, y la misericordia final y la bendita restauración concebida para ellos, muestra la paciencia y el amor de Dios.

Vv. 33-36. El apóstol Pablo conocía los misterios del reino de Dios tan bien como ningún otro hombre; sin embargo, se reconoce impotente; desesperando por llegar al fondo, se sienta humildemente en el borde y adora lo profundo. Los que más saben en este estado imperfecto, sienten más su debilidad. No es sólo la profundidad de los consejos divinos sino las riquezas, la abundancia de lo que es precioso y de valor. Los consejos divinos son completos; no sólo tienen profundidad y altura, sino anchura y longitud, Efesios iii, 18, y eso sobrepasa a todo conocimiento. Hay vasta distancia y desproporción entre Dios y el hombre, entre el Creador y la criatura, que por siempre nos impide conocer sus caminos. ¿Qué hombre le enseñará a Dios cómo gobernar al mundo? El apóstol adora la soberanía de los consejos divinos. Todas las cosas de cielo y tierra, especialmente las que se relacionan con nuestra salvación, que corresponden a nuestra paz, son todas de Él por la creación, por medio de Él por la providencia, para que al final sean para Él. De Dios como Manantial y Fuente de todo; por medio de Cristo, para Dios como fin. Estas incluyen todas las relaciones de Dios con sus criaturas; si todos somos de Él, y por Él, todos seremos de Él y para Él.
