1When morning came, all the chief priests and elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put Him to death. 2And when they had bound Him, they led Him away and delivered Him to Pontius Pilate the governor. 3Then Judas, His betrayer, seeing that He was condemned, repented and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, 4saying, I have sinned by betraying innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us? You see to it. 5And he threw down the pieces of silver in the temple and departed, and went and hanged himself. 6And the chief priests took the silver pieces and said, It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, because it is the price of blood. 7And they took counsel and bought with them the potter's field, to bury strangers in. 8Therefore that field has been called the Field of Blood to this day. 9Then was fulfilled what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying, And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of Him who was valued, whom they of the children of Israel valued, 10and gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord directed me. 11And Jesus stood before the governor. And the governor questioned Him, saying, Are You the King of the Jews? And Jesus said to him, It is as you say. 12And while He was being accused by the chief priests and elders, He answered nothing. 13Then Pilate said to Him, Do You not hear how many things they witness against You? 14But He answered him not one word, so that the governor marveled greatly. 15Now at the feast the governor was accustomed to releasing to the multitude one prisoner whom they wished. 16And at that time they had a notorious prisoner called Barabbas. 17Therefore, when they had gathered together, Pilate said to them, Whom do you want me to release to you? Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ? 18For he knew that they had delivered Him over because of envy. 19While he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent to him, saying, Have nothing to do with that just Man, for I have suffered many things today in a dream because of Him. 20But the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitudes that they should ask for Barabbas and destroy Jesus. 21The governor answered and said to them, Which of the two do you want me to release to you? And Pilate commanded the body to be given. 59And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, 60and laid it in his new tomb which he had hewn out of the rock; and he rolled a large stone against the door of the tomb, and departed. 61And Mary Magdalene was there, and the other Mary, sitting opposite the tomb. 62And on the next day, which followed the Day of Preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees gathered together to Pilate, 63saying, Sir, we remember, while He was still alive, how that deceiver said, After three days I will rise. 64Therefore, command that the tomb be made secure until the third day, that His disciples not come by night and steal Him away, and say to the people, He has risen from the dead. So the last deception will be worse than the first. 65Pilate said to them, You have a guard; go your way, make it as secure as you know how. 66So they went and made the tomb secure, sealing the stone and setting the guard.

El sepulcro sellado. Vv. 1-10. Los impíos poco ven de las consecuencias de sus delitos cuando los perpetran, pero deben rendir cuentas por todo. Judas reconoció de la manera más completa ante los principales sacerdotes que él había pecado y traicionado a una persona inocente. Este fue un testimonio total del carácter de Cristo; pero los gobernantes estaban endurecidos. Judas se fue, tirando al suelo el dinero, y se ahorcó por ser incapaz de soportar el terror de la ira divina, y la angustia de la desesperación. Poca duda cabe de que la muerte de Judas fue anterior a la de nuestro bendito Señor.
Pero, ¿fue nada para ellos haber tenido sed de esta sangre, y haber contratado a Judas para traicionarlo, y que la hubieran condenado a ser derramada injustamente? Así hacen los necios que se burlan del pecado. Así hacen muchos que toman a la ligera a Cristo crucificado. Y es caso corriente de lo engañoso de nuestros corazones tomar a la ligera nuestro propio pecado insistiendo en los pecados del prójimo. Pero el juicio de Dios es según verdad.
Muchos aplican este pasaje de la compra del campo con el dinero que Judas devolvió para significar el favor concebido por la sangre de Cristo para con los extraños y los pecadores gentiles. Eso cumplió una profecía, Zacarías xi, 12.
Judas avanzó mucho en el arrepentimiento, pero no fue para salvación. Confesó, pero no a Dios; él no acudió a Él y dijo: Padre he pecado contra el cielo. Nadie se satisfaga con las convicciones parciales que pueda tener un hombre, si sigue lleno de orgullo, enemistad y rebeldía.
Vv. 11-25. No teniendo maldad contra Jesús, Pilato le instó a aclarar las cosas, y se esforzó por declararlo sin culpa. El mensaje de su esposa fue una advertencia. Dios tiene muchas maneras de advertir a los pecadores sobre sus empresas pecaminosas, siendo una gran misericordia tener tales restricciones de parte de la Providencia, de parte de amigos fieles y de nuestras propias conciencias. ¡Oh, no hagas esta cosa abominable que el Señor odia! Es algo que podemos oír que se nos dice cuando estamos entrando en tentación, si queremos considerarlo.
Siendo dominado por los sacerdotes, el pueblo optó por Barrabás. Las multitudes que eligen al mundo más que a Dios, como rey y porción de ellos, eligen así su propio engaño. Los judíos insistían tanto en la muerte de Cristo que Pilato pensó que rehusar sería peligroso, y esta lucha muestra el poder de la conciencia aun en los peores hombres. Pero todo estaba ordenado para dejar en evidencia que Cristo sufrió no por faltas propias sino por los pecados de su pueblo. ¡Qué vano fue que Pilato esperara librarse de la culpa de la sangre inocente de una persona justa, a la cual estaba obligado a proteger por su oficio! -La maldición de los judíos contra ellos mismos ha sido espantosamente contestada en los sufrimientos de su nación. Nadie puede llevar el pecado de otros salvo aquel que no tenía pecado propio por el cual responder. ¿Y no estamos todos interesados? ¿No fue Barrabás preferido a Jesús cuando los pecadores rechazaron la salvación para conservar sus amados pecados, que roban su gloria a Dios, y asesinan las almas de ellos? Ahora la sangre de Cristo está
sobre nosotros, para siempre por medio de la misericordia, dado que los judíos la rechazaron. ¡Oh, huyamos a ella para refugiarnos!
Vv. 26-30. La crucifixión era una muerte empleada sólo por los romanos; muy terrible y miserable. Se ponía en el suelo la cruz, a la cual se clavaban manos y pies, entonces la levantaban y afirmaban en forma vertical, de modo que el peso del cuerpo colgara de los clavos hasta que el sufriente muriera con tremendo dolor. Cristo corresponde así al tipo de la serpiente de bronce levantada en el palo del estandarte. Cristo pasó por toda la miseria y vergüenza aquí relatada para adquirir para nosotros vida eterna, gozo y gloria.
Vv. 31-34. Cristo fue llevado como Cordero al matadero, como Sacrificio al altar. Hasta las misericordias de los impíos son realmente crueles. Quitándole la cruz, ellos obligaron a llevarla a un tal Simón. Prepáranos Señor para llevar la cruz que tú nos has asignado, para tomarla diariamente con júbilo, y seguirte. ¿Hubo alguna vez dolor como su dolor? Cuando contemplamos su tipo de muerte con que murió, en eso contemplemos con qué tipo de amor nos amó. Como si la muerte, una muerte tan dolorosa, no fuera suficiente, ellos agregaron varias cosas a su amargura y terror.
Vv. 35-44. Se acostumbraba a avergonzar a los malhechores con un letrero que notificara el delito por el cual sufrían. Así pusieron uno sobre la cabeza de Cristo. O concibieron para reproche suyo, pero Dios lo pasó por alto, porque aun la acusación fue para su honra.
Había dos ladrones crucificados con Él al mismo tiempo. En su muerte, fue contado con los pecadores para que, en nuestra muerte, seamos contados con los santos. Las burlas y afrentas que recibió están registradas aquí. Los enemigos de Cristo trabajan fuerte para hacer que los demás crean cosas de la religión y del pueblo de Dios, que ellos mismos saben que son falsas.
Los principales sacerdotes y escribas, y los ancianos, se mofaron de Cristo por ser el Rey de Israel. Mucha gente podría gustar mucho del Rey de Israel, si se hubiera bajado de la cruz; si ellos pudieran tener su reino sin la tribulación a través de la cual deben entrar ahora. Pero si no hay cruz, no hay Cristo ni corona. Los que van a reinar con Él deben estar dispuestos a sufrir con Él. Así, pues, nuestro Señor Jesús, habiendo emprendido la satisfacción de la justicia de Dios, lo hizo sometiéndose al peor castigo de los hombres. Y en cada registro minuciosamente detallado de los sufrimientos de Cristo, encontramos cumplida alguna predicción de los profetas o los salmos.
Vv. 45-50. Durante las tres horas que continuaron las tinieblas, Jesús estuvo en agonía, luchando con las potestades de las tinieblas y sufriendo el desagrado de su Padre contra el pecado del hombre, por el cual ahora hacía ofrenda su alma. Nunca hubo tres horas como esa desde el día en que Dios creó al hombre en la tierra, nunca hubo una escena tan tenebrosa y espantosa; fue el punto sin retorno de ese gran asunto, la redención y salvación del hombre. Jesús expresó una queja en el Salmo xxii, 1. Ahí nos enseña lo útil que es la palabra de Dios para dirigirnos en oración y nos recomienda usar las expresiones de las Escrituras para orar. El creyente puede haber saboreado algunas gotas de amargura, pero sólo puede formarse una idea muy débil de la grandeza de los sufrimientos de Cristo. Sin embargo, de ahí aprende algo del amor del Salvador por los pecadores; de ahí obtiene una convicción más profunda de la vileza y mal del pecado, y de lo que él le debe a Cristo, que lo libra de la ira venidera. Sus enemigos ridiculizaron perversamente su lamento. Muchos de los reproches lanzados contra la palabra de Dios y al pueblo de Dios, surgen, como aquí, de errores groseros.
Cristo habló con toda su fuerza, justo antes de expirar, para demostrar que su vida no se la quitaban, sino la entregaba libremente en manos de su Padre. Tuvo fuerzas para desafiar a las potestades de la muerte; y para mostrar que por el Espíritu eterno se ofreció a sí mismo, siendo el Sacerdote y Sacrificio, y clamó a gran voz. Entonces, entregó el espíritu. El Hijo de Dios, en la cruz, murió por la violencia del dolor a que fue sometido. Su alma fue separada de su cuerpo y, así, su cuerpo quedó real y verdaderamente muerto. Fue cierto que Cristo murió porque era necesario que muriera. Se había comprometido a hacerse ofrenda por el pecado y lo hizo cuando entregó voluntariamente su vida.
Vv. 51-56. La rasgadura del velo significó que Cristo, por su muerte, abrió un camino hacia Dios. Ahora tenemos el camino abierto a través de Cristo al trono de gracia, o trono de misericordia, y al trono de gloria del más allá. Cuando consideramos debidamente la muerte de Cristo, nuestros corazones duros y empedernidos debieran rasgarse; el corazón, no la ropa. El corazón que no se rinde, que no se derrite donde se presenta claramente a Jesucristo crucificado, es más duro que una roca. Los sepulcros se abrieron, y se levantaron muchos cuerpos de santos que dormían. No se nos dice a quiénes se aparecieron, en qué manera y cómo desaparecieron; y no debemos desear saber más de lo que está escrito.
Las apariciones aterradoras de Dios en su providencia a veces obran extrañamente para la convicción y el despertar de los pecadores. Esto fue expresado en el terror que cayó sobre el centurión y los soldados romanos. Podemos reflexionar con consuelo en los abundantes testimonios dados del carácter de Jesús; y procurando no dar causa justa de ofensa, dejar en manos del Señor que absuelva nuestros caracteres si vivimos para Él. Nosotros, con los ojos de la fe, contemplemos a Cristo, y éste crucificado, y seamos afectados con el gran amor con que nos amó. Pero sus amigos no pudieron dar más que unas miradas; ellos lo contemplaron, pero no pudieron ayudarlo. Nunca fueron desplegados en forma tan tremenda la naturaleza y los efectos horribles del pecado que en aquel día, en que el amado Hijo del Padre colgó de la cruz, sufriendo por el pecado, el Justo por el injusto, para llevarnos a Dios. Rindámonos voluntariamente a su servicio.
Vv. 57-61. Nada de pompa ni de solemnidades hubo en el entierro de Cristo. Como no tuvo casa propia, donde reclinar su cabeza, mientras vivió, tampoco así tuvo tumba propia, donde reposara su cuerpo cuando estuvo muerto. Nuestro Señor Jesús, que no tuvo pecado propio, no tuvo tumba propia. Los judíos determinaron que debía tener su tumba con los malos, que debía ser enterrado con los ladrones con quienes fue crucificado, pero Dios pasó por alto eso, para que pudiera estar con los ricos en su muerte, Isaías liii, 9. Aunque al ojo humano pueda causar terror contemplar el funeral, debiera causarnos regocijo si recordamos cómo Cristo, por su sepultación, ha cambiado la naturaleza de la tumba para los creyentes. Debemos imitar siempre el entierro de Cristo estando continuamente ocupados en el funeral espiritual de nuestros pecados.
Vv. 62-66. Los principales sacerdotes y fariseos estaban en tratos con Pilato para asegurar el sepulcro, cuando debieran haber estado dedicados a sus devociones por ser el día de reposo judío. Esto fue permitido para que hubiera prueba cierta de la resurrección de nuestro Señor. Pilato les dijo que podían asegurar el sepulcro tan cuidadosamente como pudieran. Sellaron la piedra, pusieron guardias y se satisficieron con que todo lo necesario fuera realizado. Pero era necio resguardar así el sepulcro contra los pobres y débiles discípulos, por innecesario; mientras era necedad pensar en resguardarlo contra el poder de Dios por fútil e insensato; sin embargo, ellos pensaron que actuaban sabiamente. El Señor prende al sabio en su sabiduría. Así se hará que toda la ira y los planes de los enemigos de Cristo fomenten su gloria.
