1¡ESCUCHAD, oh cielos, hablaré; y oiga la tierra los dichos de mi boca! 2Descenderá, como lluvia, mi doctrina; destilará, como el rocío, mi discurso; como llovizna sobre la hierba, y como los aguaceros sobre la grama. 3Porque el nombre de Jehová proclamaré ¡atribuíd la grandeza a nuestro Dios! 4Él es la Roca; perfecta es su obra; porque todos sus caminos son justicia: Dios de verdad y sin iniquidad, él es justo y recto. 5De hacer mal, a él no se le puede tachar; de sus hijos solamente es la mancha; ¡generación perversa y torcida!  6¿Para con Jehová os portáis así, oh pueblo necio y no sabio? ¿No es él tu padre que te adquirió? cierto que él te hizo y te estableció. 7Recuerda los días de la antigüedad; pensad en los años de muchas generaciones: pregunta a tu padre, que él te anunciará, a tus ancianos, y ellos te dirán, 8que en repartiendo el Altísimo herencia a las naciones, cuando hizo separarse a los hijos de Adam, iba fijando los límites de los pueblos conforme al número de los hijos de Israel. 9Porque la porción de Jehová es su pueblo; Jacob es su posesión especial. 10Le halla en una tierra desierta, entre la desolación de una horrorosa soledad; le tiende en derredor su protección, le instruye, le guarda como a la niña de su mismo ojo. 11Como el águila despierta su nidada, revolotea sobre sus polluelos, extiende sus alas, los toma, los lleva sobre sus fuertes plumas; 12así Jehová solo le conducía, y no había con Él ningún dios extraño. 13Le hacía cabalgar sobre las alturas de la tierra, y comió el pueblo los frutos del campo; también él le hizo chupar miel de la peña, y aceite de la roca durísima; 14manteca de vacas y leche de ovejas, con lo más pingüe de corderos cebados; carneros también de la casta del Basán, y machos de cabrío, con lo más escogido del trigo: y de la sangre de uvas solías beber vino. 15Mas engordóse Jesurún, y dió coces; (engordástete, engrosástete, cubrístete de gordura); entonces desechó a Dios su Hacedor, y menospreció la Roca de su salvación. 16Le movían a celos con dioses extraños, con sus abominaciones le provocaban a ira. 17Sacrificaban a los demonios, y no a Dios, a dioses que no conocieron; a nuevos dioses, recién venidos: no los temieron vuestros padres. 18De la Roca que te engendró no haces caso, y te has olvidado del Dios que te dió el ser. 19Y Jehová lo vió, y los trató con desprecio, porque le habían provocado sus hijos y sus hijas. 20Y dijo: Yo esconderé mi rostro de ellos; veré cual será su postrimería; porque generación muy perversa es, son hijos en quienes no hay fe. 21Ellos me movieron a celos con lo que no es Dios, me provocaron a ira con sus ídolos: y yo los moveré a celos con lo que no es pueblo, con nación necia los provocaré a ira. 22Porque se ha encendido un fuego en mi ira que arderá hasta lo más hondo del infierno; y consumirá la tierra y sus productos, y abrasará los cimientos de los montes. 23Juntaré sobre ellos males; mis saetas agotaré en ellos: 24consumidos serán de hambre, devorados también de ardientes calenturas, y de amarga pestilencia; y dientes de bestias enviaré sobre ellos, con veneno de serpientes del polvo. 25Por fuera desolará la espada, y dentro de las cámaras, el espanto: así el mancebo como la doncella perecerán, el niño de pecho como el hombre cano. 26Dije que los echaría lejos, que haría cesar de entre los hombres la memoria de ellos; 27si no fuera que temo la ira del enemigo; no sea que lo entiendan mal sus adversarios; no sea que digan: Nuestra mano es alta, y no es Jehová quien ha hecho todo esto. 28Porque son una nación sin prudencia, y no hay en ellos entendimiento. 29¡Oh si fueran sabios, si consideraran esto, si entendieran su postrimería! 30¡Cómo perseguiría uno a mil, y dos pondrían en fuga a diez mil, si su Roca no los hubiera vendido, y Jehová no los hubiera entregado! 31Porque la roca de ellos no es como nuestra Roca; y nuestros enemigos sean de ello los jueces. 32Porque de vid de Sodoma es la vid de ellos, y tomada de los campos de Gomorra: sus uvas son uvas de hiel; amargos son los racimos que tienen. 33Veneno de serpientes es su vino, y ponzoña cruel de áspides. 34¿Acaso no tengo yo esto guardado conmigo, sellado entre mis tesoros? 35Mía es la venganza y la retribución; al debido tiempo resbalará su pie; porque se acerca el día de su calamidad, y se apresuran los males preparados para ellos. 36Porque Jehová juzgará a su pueblo; y de sus siervos se dolerá, cuando viere que se les ha ido el auxilio, sin quedarles cosa preciosa ni vil. 37Y dirá: ¿Dónde están sus dioses, la roca en que confiaban; 38los que comían los sebos de sus sacrificios, y bebían el vino de sus libaciones? ¡Que se levanten ellos y os ayuden, y extiendan sobre vosotros su protección! 39Ved ahora que yo, yo solo soy, y no hay dioses conmigo; yo hago morir, y hago vivir, yo hiero, y yo curo; y no hay quien libre de mi mano. 40Porque alzo al cielo mi mano, y digo: ¡Yo vivo eternamente! 41Cuando afilare mi luciente espada, y mi mano empuñare el juicio, retribuiré la venganza a mis adversarios, y a los que me odian daré la recompensa. 42Embriagaré de sangre mis saetas, y mi espada comerá carne; embriagarélas con la sangre de muertos y de cautivos, de la cabeza de los caudillos del enemigo. 43¡Regocijaos, oh naciones, con su pueblo, porque vengará la sangre de sus siervos, y retribuirá la venganza a sus adversarios; mas perdonará a su tierra, a su pueblo! 44¶De manera que vino Moisés, y recitó todas las palabras de este cántico a oídos del pueblo, él y Josué hijo de Nun. 45Y cuando Moisés hubo acabado de recitar todas estas palabras a todo Israel, 46les dijo: Fijad vuestro corazón en todas estas palabras que testifico contra vosotros hoy; para que las encarguéis a vuestros hijos, a fin de que cuiden de cumplir todas las palabras de esta ley. 47Porque esta no es una cosa inútil de vuestra parte, sino que es vuestra misma vida; y por medio de esto prolongaréis vuestros días sobre la tierra adonde vais, pasando el Jordán, para tomar posesión de ella. 48¶Y Jehová habló a Moisés en aquel día, diciendo: 49Sube a esta serranía de Abarim, al monte Nebo, situado en la tierra de Moab, que está frente a Jericó; y mira la tierra de Canaán, que voy a dar a los hijos de Israel para que la posean; 50y muere en el monte adonde subes, y sé agregado a tu pueblo; así como murió Aarón tu hermano en el monte Hor, y fué agregado a su pueblo: 51por cuanto prevaricasteis contra mí en medio de los hijos de Israel, junto a las aguas de Meriba-cades, en el desierto de Zin; puesto que no me santificasteis en medio de los hijos de Israel. 52Porque podrás mirar la tierra desde lejos, mas no podrás pasar allí, al país que voy a dar a los hijos de Israel.


Matthew Henry - Concise Commentary
 1   Moses begins with a solemn appeal to heaven and earth, concerning the truth and importance of what he was about to say. His doctrine is the gospel, the speech of God, the doctrine of Christ; the doctrine of grace and mercy through him, and of life and salvation by him.

 3   He is a Rock. This is the first time God is called so in Scripture. The expression denotes that the Divine power, faithfulness, and love, as revealed in Christ and the gospel, form a foundation which cannot be changed or moved, on which we may build our hopes of happiness. And under his protection we may find refuge from all our enemies, and in all our troubles; as the rocks in those countries sheltered from the burning rays of the sun, and from tempests, or were fortresses from the enemy. His work is perfect: that of redemption and salvation, in which there is a display of all the Divine perfection, complete in all its parts. All God's dealings with his creatures are regulated by wisdom which cannot err, and perfect justice. He is indeed just and right; he takes care that none shall lose by him. A high charge is exhibited against Israel. Even God's children have their spots, while in this imperfect state; for if we say we have no sin, no spot, we deceive ourselves. But the sin of Israel was not habitual, notorious, unrepented sin; which is a certain mark of the children of Satan. They were fools to forsake their mercies for lying vanities. All wilful sinners, especially sinners in Israel, are unwise and ungrateful.

 7   Moses gives particular instances of God's kindness and concern for them. The eagle's care for her young is a beautiful emblem of Christ's love, who came between Divine justice and our guilty souls, and bare our sins in his own body on the tree. And by the preached gospel, and the influences of the Holy Spirit, He stirs up and prevails upon sinners to leave Satan's bondage. In Deut 32:13, Deut 32:14, are emblems of the conquest believers have over their spiritual enemies, sin, Satan, and the world, in and through Christ. Also of their safety and triumph in him; of their happy frames of soul, when they are above the world, and the things of it. This will be the blessed case of spiritual Israel in every sense in the latter day.

 15   Here are two instances of the wickedness of Israel, each was apostasy from God. These people were called Jeshurun, an upright people, so some; a seeing people, so others: but they soon lost the reputation both of their knowledge and of their righteousness. They indulged their appetites, as if they had nothing to do but to make provision for the flesh to fulfil the lusts of it. Those who make a god of themselves, and a god of their bellies, in pride and wantonness, and cannot bear to be told of it, thereby forsake God, and show they esteem him lightly. There is but one way of a sinner's acceptance and sanctification, however different modes of irreligion, or false religion, may show that favourable regard for other ways, which is often miscalled candid. How mad are idolaters, who forsake the Rock of salvation, to run themselves upon the rock of perdition!

 19   The revolt of Israel was described in the foregoing verses, and here follow the resolves of Divine justice as to them. We deceive ourselves, if we think that God will be mocked by a faithless people. Sin makes us hateful in the sight of the holy God. See what mischief sin does, and reckon those to be fools that mock at it.

 26   The idolatry and rebellions of Israel deserved, and the justice of God seemed to demand, that they should be rooted out. But He spared Israel, and continues them still to be living witnesses of the truth of the Bible, and to silence unbelievers. They are preserved for wise and holy purposes and the prophecies give us some idea what those purposes are. The Lord will never disgrace the throne of his glory. It is great wisdom, and will help much to the return of sinners to God, seriously to consider their latter end, or the future state. It is here meant particularly of what God foretold by Moses, about this people in the latter days; but it may be applied generally. Oh that men would consider the happiness they will lose, and the misery they will certainly plunge into, if they go on in their trespasses! What will be in the end thereof? Jer 5:31. For the Lord will in due time bring down the enemies of the church, in displeasure against their wickedness. When sinners deem themselves most secure, they suddenly fall into destruction. And God's time to appear for the deliverance of his people, is when things are at the worst with them. But those who trust to any rock but God, will find it fail them when they most need it. The rejection of the Messiah by the Jewish nation, is the continuance of their ancient idolatry, apostasy, and rebellion. They shall be brought to humble themselves before the Lord, to repent of their sins, and to trust in their long-rejected Mediator for salvation. Then he will deliver them, and make their prosperity great.

 39   This conclusion of the song speaks, 1. Glory to God. No escape can be made from his power. 2. It speaks terror to his enemies. Terror indeed to those who hate him. The wrath of God is here revealed from heaven against them. 3. It speaks comfort to his own people. The song concludes with words of joy. Whatever judgments are brought upon sinners, it shall go well with the people of God.

 44   Here is the solemn delivery of this song to Israel, with a charge to mind all the good words Moses had said unto them. It is not a trifle, but a matter of life and death: mind it, and you are made for ever; neglect it, and you are for ever undone. Oh that men were fully persuaded that religion is their life, even the life of their souls!

 48   Now Moses had done his work, why should he desire to live a day longer? God reminds him of the sin of which he had been guilty, for which he was kept from entering Canaan. It is good for the best of men to die repenting the infirmities of which they are conscious. But those may die with comfort and ease, whenever God calls for them, notwithstanding the sins they remember against themselves, who have a believing prospect, and a well-grounded hope of eternal life beyond death.
