King James 3 - The Literal Translation

1And the people were evil, as those complaining in the ears of Jehovah was hot, and the fire of Jehovah burned among them and devoured in the extreme edge of the camp. 2And the people cried to Moses, and Moses prayed to Jehovah, and the fire was quenched. 3And he called the name of that place Taberah, because the fire of Jehovah burned among them. 4And the mixed multitude among them lusted with a great lust; and the sons of Israel also turned back and wept, and said, Who shall cause us to eat flesh? 5We remember the fish that we ate in Egypt for nothing; the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlic; 6and now our soul withers. There is nothing except this manna before our eyes. 7And the manna was like coriander seed, and its look like the look of bdellium resin gum. 8And the people went around and gathered it, and ground it in mills, or beat it in mortars, and boiled it in a pan, and made it into cakes. And its taste was like the taste of fresh oil. 9And when the dew came down on the camp by night, the manna came down on it. 10And Moses heard the people weeping by its families, each man at the door of his tent; and the anger of Jehovah was exceedingly hot, and in the eyes of Moses it was evil. 11And Moses said to Jehovah, Why have You done evil to Your servant; and why have I not found grace in Your eyes to put the burden of all this people on me? 12I, have I conceived all this people? I, have I begotten it, that You say to me, Bear it in your bosom as the foster father bears the suckling, to the land which You have sworn to its fathers? 13Where shall I get flesh to give to all this people? For they weep to me, saying, Give to us flesh that we may eat. 14I am not able, I alone, to bear all this people, for it is too heavy for me; 15and if You deal thus with me, I pray quickly kill me, if I have found grace in Your eyes, and let me not look on my affliction. 16And Jehovah said to Moses, Assemble to Me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom you have known that they are elders of the people, and its officers. And you shall take them to the tabernacle of the congregation; and they shall station themselves there with you. 17And I shall come down and speak with you there; and I will take of the spirit which is upon you, and will put it on them; and they will bear the burden of the people with you, that you may not bear it yourself alone. 18And you shall say to the people, Sanctify yourselves for tomorrow, and you shall eat flesh. For you have wept in the ears of Jehovah, saying, Who shall give us flesh, for we had good in Egypt? And Jehovah shall give flesh to you, and you shall eat. 19You shall not eat one day, and not two days, and not five days, and not ten days, and not twenty days; 20but to a month of days, until it it comes up out of your nostrils, and it shall become to you a loathsome thing, because you have despised Jehovah who is in your midst, and weep before Him, saying, Why is it that we have come out of Egypt? 21And Moses said, The people in whose midst I am are six hundred thousand footmen; and You, You have said, I shall give flesh to them, and they shall eat a month of days. 22Shall flock and herd be slaughtered for them, so one may find for them? Are all the fish in the sea to be gathered for them, that one may find for them? 23And Jehovah said to Moses, Is the hand of Jehovah shortened? Now you shall see whether My Word shall come to pass to you or not.  24And Moses went out and spoke to the people the words of Jehovah and gathered seventy men of the elders of the people, and caused them to stand around the tabernacle. 25And Jehovah came down in the cloud and spoke to him, and took of the spirit which was on him, and put it on the seventy men of the elders. And it happened, as the spirit rested on them, that they prophesied, but they did not continue. 26And two of the men were left in the camp, the name of the one being Eldad, and the name of the second Medad; and the spirit rested on them, and they were among those written, but did not go out to the tabernacle. And they prophesied in the camp. 27And a young man ran and told Moses, and said, Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp. 28And Joshua the son of Nun, minister to Moses, of his young men, answered and said, My lord Moses, stop them. 29And Moses said to him, Are you jealous for my sake? Oh that it was given to all people to be Jehovah’s prophets, that Jehovah would put His spirit on them! 30And Moses withdrew into the camp, he and the elders of Israel. 31And a wind went forth from Jehovah and cut off quails from the sea, and let them fall by the camp, as a day’s journey here, and as a day’s journey there, all around the camp, and about two cubits above the face of the land. 32And the people rose up all that day, and all that night, and the day after, and gathered the quails; he who had least had gathered ten homers. And they spread them out for themselves around the camp. 33The flesh was yet between their teeth, it was not yet cut off, and the anger of Jehovah was hot among the people. And Jehovah struck among the people with a very great plague. 34And one called the name of that place, The Graves of Lust; for there they buried the people who lusted. 35From the Graves of Lust the people pulled up stakes to go to Hazeroth, and they remained in Hazeroth.

Versículos 1-3. El incendio de Tabera. 4-9. El pueblo desea carne y aborrece el maná. 10-15. Moisés se queja de su cargo. 16-23. Nombramiento de ancianos para dividir la carga-Promesa de darles carne. 24-30. El Espíritu reposa sobre los ancianos. 31-35. Las codornices.

Vv. 1-3. Este es el pecado del pueblo: se quejaron. Véase la pecaminosidad del pecado que se aprovecha del mandamiento para provocar. La debilidad de la ley descubre al pecado pero no puede destruirlo; lo controla, pero no puede vencerlo. Ellos se quejaron. Los que tienen un espíritu disconforme, siempre hallarán algo porque pelear o afanarse, aunque las circunstancias de su situación exterior nunca hayan sido tan favorables. El Señor lo oyó, pero no Moisés. Dios conoce las quejas y murmuraciones secretas del corazón aunque estén ocultas de los hombres. Lo que vio le desagradó tanto, que los castigó por este pecado. El fuego de la ira de ellos contra Dios ardió en sus mentes; con justicia el fuego de la ira de Dios los azotó por su pecado; pero los juicios de Dios les sobrevinieron paulatinamente para que recibieran la advertencia. Pareciera que Dios no se complace en castigar; cuando empieza, pronto se convence para dejarlo apagar.

Vv. 4-9. El hombre habiendo abandonado el reposo, se siente incómodo y miserable, aunque próspero. Ellos se cansaron de la provisión que Dios había hecho para ellos aunque era comida sana y alimenticia. No costaba dinero ni cuidados, y el trabajo de juntarlo era indudablemente poco; sin embargo, hablaban de la baratura de Egipto y del pescado que allá comían gratuitamente; ¡como si les hubiera costado nada, cuando lo pagaban bien caro con duro trabajo! Mientras vivieron de maná parecían exentos de la maldición que el pecado ha acarreado al hombre, que debe comer el pan con el sudor de su frente; no obstante, se referían a él con burla. La mente descontenta y peleadora encontrará defectos en lo que no tiene falla en sí, pero que es demasiado bueno para ella. Quienes podrían ser felices a menudo se sienten miserables debido al descontento.
No podían estar satisfechos si no tenían carne para comer. Es la evidencia del dominio de la mente carnal cuando queremos tener los deleites y las satisfacciones de los sentidos. No debemos ceder en ningún deseo que no podamos, por fe, convertir en oración, como no podemos cuando pedimos carne para nuestra concupiscencia. Lo que de por sí es legítimo se vuelve malo cuando Dios no nos lo da, pero nosotros lo deseamos.

Vv. 10-15. La provocación fue muy grande; pero Moisés se expresó de una manera que le convenía. Menospreció el honor que Dios le había conferido. Magnificó sus propios logros aunque lo dirigió la sabiduría divina y poder omnipotente, para dispensar recompensas y castigos. Habla desconfiando de la gracia divina. Si la obra hubiera sido mucho menor, él no habría podido realizarla por sus propias fuerzas, pero si hubiera sido mucho mayor hubiere podido hacerla por la fuerza que Dios le hubiera dado. Oremos: Señor no nos metas en tentación.

Vv. 16–23. Moisés tiene que elegir a los que conocía para que fueran ancianos, esto es, hombres sabios y experimentados. Dios promete darles los atributos. Si no eran idóneos para el cargo, recibirían la idoneidad. Aun la gente descontenta recibirá su paga, para que toda boca se cierre. Vea aquí: -1. La vanidad de todos los deleites sensuales; se hartan, pero no se satisfacen. Solo los placeres espirituales satisfacen y duran. De la manera que el mundo pasa, así pasan sus concupiscencias.
2. ¡Cuán brutales son los pecados de la glotonería y ebriedad! Hacen daño al cuerpo con lo que debiera darle su salud. Moisés objeta. Hasta los grandes y verdaderos creyentes a veces encuentran difícil confiar en Dios sometidos al desaliento de causas secundarias y, contra esperanza creer en esperanza. Aquí Dios lleva a Moisés a este punto, el Señor Dios es Todopoderoso y pone la prueba del asunto, Ahora verás si se cumple mi palabra o no. Si Él habla, está hecho.

Vv. 24-30. Aquí tenemos el cumplimiento de la palabra de Dios a Moisés, de que debe tener ayuda para gobernar a Israel. Él dio su Espíritu a los setenta ancianos. Ellos hablaron de las cosas de Dios al pueblo para que todos los que les oyeran pudieran decir que de verdad Dios estaba con ellos. Dos de los ancianos, Eldad y Medad, no habían venido al tabernáculo, como el resto, sensibles a su propia debilidad e indignidad, pero el Espíritu de Dios los halló en el campamento y allí ejercieron su don de orar, predicar y alabar a Dios; hablaban movidos por el Espíritu Santo. El Espíritu de Dios no está limitado al tabernáculo sino que, como el viento, sopla donde quiere. Y los que se humillan serán exaltados; y los que son más aptos para gobernar son los que menos lo ambicionan.
Josué no desea que sean castigados sino sólo sean refrenados en el futuro. Esta moción hizo por celo por lo que él pensaba debía ser la unidad de la iglesia. Él los hubiera acallado, no fuera que causaran división o rivalizaran con Moisés, pero Moisés no temía ninguno de esos efectos de aquel Espíritu que Dios había puesto en ellos. ¿Rechazaremos a los que pertenecen a Cristo o los refrenaremos de hacer algo bueno, porque no están en todo de acuerdo con nuestras ideas? Moisés desearía que todo el pueblo del Señor fuese profeta, que Él pusiera su Espíritu en todos.
Que quienes desean estar en el poder crean el testimonio de Moisés: que el gobierno es una carga. Es una carga de cuidado y problemas para quienes toman conciencia del deber que es; y para los que no, resultará una carga más pesada el día en que deban dar cuentas. Que el ejemplo de Moisés sea seguido por quienes están en el poder; que no desprecien el consejo y asistencia de otros, sino que la deseen y agradezcan. Si la totalidad del pueblo del Señor fuera profeta o ministro, por el Espíritu de Cristo, aunque no todos concordaran en asuntos externos, hay obra suficiente para todos en el llamamiento a los pecadores a arrepentirse y tener fe en nuestro Señor Jesús.

Vv. 31-35. Dios cumplió su promesa al pueblo, dándoles carne. ¡Cuánto más diligentes son los hombres para recoger carne que perece, que para laborar por la comida que para vida eterna permanece! Somos rápidos para ver las cosas temporales, pero la estupidez nos ciega en cuanto a las cosas eternas. No necesitamos argumentos para ir en pos de las ventajas mundanas, pero cuando tenemos que asegurar las riquezas verdaderas, entonces, somos todo olvido.
Los que están bajo el poder de la mente carnal, verán satisfechas sus concupiscencias, aunque sea para seguros daño y ruina de sus preciosas almas. Ellos pagaron caras sus fiestas. A menudo, por ira Dios concede el deseo de los pecadores, mientras por amor niega los deseos de su propio pueblo. Si obtenemos lo que deseamos indebidamente, tenemos motivo para temer, pues será de una u otra manera una pena, y una cruz para nosotros. ¡Y cuánta multitud hay en todas partes que acortan la vida por excesos de uno u otro tipo! Busquemos los placeres que satisfacen, pero nunca excesivamente, y que durarán por siempre jamás.
